Author: Kevin Stith

Portland is the largest city in the state of Maine. The city was originally called Machigonne by its first inhabitants. When the first British settlement set base in the city, the name was changed to Casco. The city underwent several name changes before finally settling with Portland following the American Revolutionary War in 1786.

Portland borders South Portland, Westbrook, and Falmout. Geographically, this city is placed on a peninsula and juts out into the Casco Bay.

Less than 10% are manufacturing, 20% retail and 10% government. The strong and ever growing economy has led to the development of a very sound infrastructure.

Portland is the county seat of Cumberland County, which showcases a beautiful blend of history and modernity. Most of Maine's population lives in Greater Portland. Downtown Portland is lively and has the historic Old Port along the Portland harbor. Along with the diverse cultural offerings, Portland has still retained the small-town charm. The city's metropolitan populace has lent their talent to performing arts, thus resulting in an array of exhibits, festivals and concerts.

Sports feature as an important ingredient in the lives of the city's inhabitants. Portland boasts of professional baseball and a hockey teams. For those who are historically inclined, there are several memorable parks like Baxter Boulevard (Back Cove), Deering Oaks, and Lincoln Park.
