Types of Humidifiers

Author: Josh Riverside

If you've determined that you have low humidity in your home or work space, and that you need a humidifier, what type and what brand of humidifier should you buy? In searching for the best humidifiers, much will depend on your circumstances.

Three popular types are tabletop, console, and furnace humidifiers.

Tabletop models

Tabletop models are best for you if you need an inexpensive way to humidify a small space. These models are for single-room use. Check the model dimensions to determine if it can accommodate your area. In tabletop humidifiers, you will have a choice between warm mist and cool mist. Warm mist dispenses heated water into the air. This type can also dispense medications into the air. This is a good choice if sound is a main concern, as they are generally quieter than cool mist. However, if the humidifier will be placed within reach of children, the cool mist is a better option. The cool mist is also less expensive to operate.

Console models

Console models are larger units and are designed for floor use. This is the best choice for you if you need to humidify a larger area. Some can even humidify an entire apartment or house. You will need to check the capacity of the models to determine which will cover your space.

Furnace humidifiers

Furnace humidifiers are a good choice if you have forced-air heating. This whole house humidifier is installed in your furnace unit, so it doesn't take up any space in your home.
