Silver Picture Frame

Author: Alison Cole

Silver Picture Frames are special and invaluable gifts for weddings, special occasions or displaying personal pictures or those of loved ones. The frames can be plain silver, in different shapes, or studded with precious or semi-precious stones. Whatever the design and size, a Silver Picture Frame is a classy and a costly possession and in no time becomes a family heirloom passed down the generations. If one can afford it, then there should be no holding back in selecting Silver Picture Frames from various sizes, shapes and themes, in pure silver or combinations. If you want to economize and still have a silver frame, then opt for silver-plated frames that retain the workmanship of pure or sterling silver frames. What is more, a silver-plated frame is modestly priced even though intricately designed.

Silver is a precious metal and its use dates back to ancient times. In the United States the craft of silversmith was one of the first established crafts. The term sterling is a purity or quality standard that denotes 92.5% purity, with the rest being hardening alloys. As a metal, silver can be cleaned with a soft damp cloth to maintain its shine. This easy maintainability of silver is one reason for its growing popularity in wedding and anniversary gift items, and also for special occasions, birthday presents or graduation keepsakes. One can personalize them with names or small messages engraved on the frame.

Over a period of time the new silver frame develops a soft, rich and mellow patina responsible for its unique look. The look is also enhanced by a slight amount of black oxidation in the fine details of design, giving the frame design a three-dimensional look. If a silver look is preferred, then a soft hand wash with mild detergent or silver polish is recommended for sterling silver objects and frames. On the other hand, silver-plated frames need to be polished with chemicals. The advantage of silver-plated frame is that one can purchase a bigger, heavier and ornate frame for same price as a small sterling Silver Picture Frame. It is not easy to tell the difference between the two without looking at the trademark.
