When I first started doing the Low Carb way of eating, I was following the Atkin's low carb diet. It worked to take the weight off, but I quickly tired of eating meat, cheese, fish, eggs. The next time I tried the low carb diet, the South Beach Diet had just come out, and it was much less restrictive in that after the 14 day induction phase, it allowed a good bit more of carbs, mainly in the way of fruits and salads.
This third time around I'm doing a modified version of the South Beach in that I didn't really do the induction phase as tightly as the book recommends. Right from the beginning, I allowed myself a few pieces of fruit. It seems to be working out fine in that I have lost about 17 pounds so far of a total of 20, and since then I've decided to go for the gusto and go for 25 pounds taking me down to 175, a weight I haven't seen in probably 25 years.
I decided that this time I wasn't going to set unreasonable expectations. A pound a week is fine. That way I'm less likely to get discouraged and quit. The surest way to make certain that you don't succeed at something is to set unreasonable expectations. Another thing is that I've always been into exercising, so as the pounds started to come off, it gave me the motivation to increase my activity therefore using the old one-two punch on it.
The nice thing about low carb eating now is that you do have so much more variety. I use the Low Carb wraps for just about everything, including egg salad, tuna salad, lunch meats, steaks, etc. There's also a bit more in the way of sweets. Besides fruit, I like the Sugar Free Jello with whipped cream, makes a nice desert.
Another plus is that there is so much more information such as websites like Low Carb Diets that make it easy to get good information. Yes, it's getting better and better for the low carb dieter. Now, if they could only figure out a way to make the low carb strawberry shortcake. |
