Many people say we need political reform in the United States Government. Indeed that would be hard to argue. Many say that it is corrupt beyond all belief, Yes, this is somewhat true, but perhaps we should also look at the system and how we choose our leaders and why there are incentives to cheat the system. It seems we are also denying human nature and the system of government itself is flawed. And is it just flawed at the Federal Level? I mean we have political corruptness at all levels of government, dont we? Political reform the critics shout; we want reform they say! Hey now there is a subject indeed. Interesting isn't it. It is rather surprising we cannot do better than this in 2006 in the greatest nation ever created in the history of the world. The most advanced civilization in the history of mankind. Yet on the other hand it sure works nice, good place to live. So you have to consider that also. It works, it is not perfect, sure it should be and we should work towards that, but as bad as we sometimes think it is, show me a better government, politic or nation? So, that is the other side of the coin. And really Adam Smith warned us about all this in advance of lobbyists, back door deals and the like, so we should not be all the surprised really. Many people get irritated just thinking about it. Yet it is not only the Political Leadership, as we all know that there are some corrupt police, judges, garbage men, code enforcement, FBI, Border Patrol and Mail Clerks too. This is because humans are inherently dishonest; 33% would lie to you if they thought they could make or save a dollar; 33% would like to you to save $100.00. I bet only 5% would never lie to anyone unless it was a life or death situation. So if we recruit from the general population (humans) for those folks in government, you will have an imperfect system from the Politicians, who actually do stand a lot to gain, down to the code enforcement officer; that is to say the BTK killer. How about your friends still in school, getting ready to choose a career? Perhaps they are already showing signs of dishonesty that you have personally witnessed, you see what I mean? Getting irritated or frustrated over such things is allowing the natural problems of humans to bother you, when you should be thinking like an observer, who is trying to stay neutral. You see simply calling all politicians crooks is stereotyping and that is not to say that many do not deserve the label. But if we call them all crooks, then no one who is honest will ever want the job, as the society would lambaste them before they even got into office. It is a complete catch 22 and there is not a lot we can do. We need political reform, indeed, we need a lot of things, but perhaps we should be looking at the system as well and re-design it to incorporate and reward more honest folks, who wish to serve in our government. I do not pretend to have all the answers yet so think on this in 2006. |
