Data Recovery

Author: Alison Cole

A computer hard disk crashing is the stuff nightmares are made of for all those who depend entirely on computers for their day-to-day work. When one talks of a hard disk crashing, it generally implies problems in the computer, the magnitude of which can be ascertained only when the data is recovered.

There are two basic types of damage to the hard disk, physical damage and logical damage. As the name would suggest, physical damage implies actual damage to parts of the computer or the central processing unit. It would comprise of wires, circuitry, chips, fuses, burnouts, etc. It means replacement or repair of parts. Logical damage, on the other hand indicates damage to the file system like incorrect reporting of various functions, system crashes, loss of data, directories gone wrong and other unaccountable discrepancies. Most operating systems come with a basic inbuilt tool kit and are able to repair faults up to a certain level.

A lot of lost data can be found using data recovery or date backup. Backup is very important and even a basic user should regularly implement it. Backup has to be done regularly, checked regularly and the data has to be uncompressed. Data backup has different roles to play. An effective rotation scheme, backup to a remote location and recovery strategy involves use of checksums to avoid making redundant copies. Data can now be salvaged from the backup storage files. There is another feature that ensures effective storage and that is continuous backup where backup is an ongoing process. It is far more effective than traditional backup systems.

Most manufacturers ensure that their product has certain features regarding data recovery and repair of logical systems. Call in a professional and you will be able to retrieve most, if not, all your lost data.
