Search Engine Optimization or SEO is a big internet buzz word, how do you optimize your web pages for the search engines? If your pages are not optimized for the search engines then it means that you lose out on a lot of traffic and a lot of potential customers. In this article I hope to give you a couple of pointers as to how you can improve your search engine rankings and see a big increase in the amount of traffic to your website.

Meta Tags: The first thing about search engine optimization is that you need your meta tags set up properly. Although search engines aren't focussing on this so much any more and some don't use it, it is still an important thing to have for those search engines that do still depend on it. This needn't be difficult, and at the very least you should have a title, a description and a keywords tag.

Keywords are probably your biggest factor to consider. You should use these liberally throughout your web pages without making it look unrealistic. As soon as it starts to become noticeable the chances are that you will tend to lose rank rather than gain it. Also use your keywords as the first words that your visitor will be likely to see on your page and especially concentrate keywords at the beginning of your page and include them in your alt tags of your images.

Links are important. You don't want to just go and get your link listed in every FFA and link farm out there but you want to arrange link swaps with other websites to increase your link popularity and this in turn increases your search engine rankings. Another way to increase your link popularity is by writing articles and putting them in article directories such as ezinearticles.com. By putting your articles on article directories you are not only getting your link on their website but hopefully also on the websites on many other people who choose to use your article on their website.

Have good content. Search engines like web pages that contain lots of good content so if you have a website just full of graphics the chances are that you are going to lose a lot of places in your search engine ranking. Concentrate on providing content that is well suited to your website and that your visitors will enjoy as well as being optimized to the search engines through the use of good keywords, etc.

The last step is to create a site map. Site maps show both search engines and visitors where to go. Use lots of keywords on your site map. Put a link to your site map on your home page and perhaps a couple of other pages so that the search engines will find it easily and then link everything together.

These are just the basic principles in optimizing your website for the search engines but I encourage you to learn what you can and do what you can to enhance your search engine positions as this is vital to your website's success.
